monday artday sponge painting

monday artday

Sponge Painting is a simple and easy way for your young child to create and experiment with art. Supplies are basic and low cost. I often purchase art supplies from discount school supplies website and re-purpose recyclable items.

Supplies:

non-toxic paint

sponges

a surface to paint on, like paper or cardboard

scissors

Cut out a few shapes from sponges. Keep it simple at first; shapes like circles, squares, and triangles are easy to cut and look great. Give your child small daubs of paint so he or she can experiment with color mixing. Give them yellow and blue so they can make their own shade of green, or red and blue to make purple. They can also add small amounts of white or black to their colors to make them lighter or darker. This is a great way for your child to learn about color.

Then once they have a color ready, let them stamp! Any sturdy paper will do, but I like to use items from my paper recycling: scrap paper, cardboard from broken down boxes, and paper bags from the grocery store. Experiment with different surfaces and give these items new life!

I love hearing feedback. Be sure to let me know if you enjoyed this art activity, and to share any variations or tips.

Finding a PlayGroup

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Playgroups are a great way to socialize with other parents, and it’s important for your child to play with other children as well.

At Playgroups USA you can search for playgroups by zip code or playgroup name.  This site is an easy way to find people in your area with similarly aged children. Urban Mamas is a Portland specific blog and a great resource for finding playgroups in the Portland metro area.

Are you part of a playgroup? Have any advice for someone looking to join one? Leave us a comment and let us know!

Monday ArtDay Recycle your broken Crayons!

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

What to do with all those broken crayons? Peal off the paper and make new ones!

Instructions: 1. Gather up all of your broken crayons, and cut them into small pieces. (An adult will need to help complete this step.) 2. Preheat the oven to 150 degrees. 3. Fill the muffin tin with an inch-thick layer of crayon pieces. 4. Bake 15-20 minutes, or until the wax is melted. 5. Allow the tin to cool; then pop out the crayons, and they’re ready for use.

Tips:
1. If you don’t have a muffin tin to devote to crayon making, you can line your regular muffin tin with foil cups.
2. Candy and soap making molds can also be used to create fun, shaped crayons. 3. Recycled crayons make a great no-cost gift or party favor.

What your child is learning? When your child is creating art he is working on his Visual and Spatial skills. He is developing his creativity and ability to think in images and pictures.

How to make Salt Dough

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Over the years I have collected and created some super fun activities to entertain and teach children. One project that ends up a masterpiece as a final product and cost little money is Salt Dough. This is a great project to make gifts for grandparents or to do with a group of children.

Ingredients needed. remember if you want to make a larger batch just use the ratio:

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 cup salt

  • 1/2 cup flour

To Make:

Mix ingredients in pan. (add food coloring or glitter if you would like) Stir on low heat. When

thickens remove from heat. Put some on waxed paper or floured surface and roll out. Save in an air-tight container.

Variations:

  • use straws to punch holes for hanging
  • use cookie cutters to make shapes like stars
  • let air dry and paper mache over
  • let air dry and let children color over
  • glue found objects onto the shapes
  • punch holes and string to create a necklace or wall hanging

What your child is learning?

  • Fine Motor Skills by sculpting and modeling clay your child is working hard on her eye fine motor skills
  • Visual and Spatial Skills by cutting out clay from cookie cutters your child is practicing his eye hand coordination and spatial relations
  • Confidence letting your child pick her own colors or shapes in art will encourage your child’s sense of self and build her confidence.

Kite Exhibit

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

I read this great posting on neighborhood notes from Nancy. I love walking around the Chinese Gardens on nice sunny day. Thanks again Nancy for keeping so many families in our area busy. We appreciate your work :)

Kite Exhibit at Portland Classical Chinese Garden

by nancy

Portland Classical Chinese Garden email regarding their current ‘Colorful Kites of China’ Exhibit.

A rare and authentic collection of more than 40 Chinese kites will be on display throughout the Portland Chinese Garden, as part of the Colorful Kites of China exhibit and activities celebrating the rebirth of spring time in the Garden.

The kite collection is the result of 17 years travel and kite learning by Bob and Charmayne Umbowers of Gig Harbor, WA. The kites represent the work of great Chinese kite builders, some who are no longer living, and also the work of contemporary kite designers and builders. The collection features kites of all sizes/colors and in shapes that communicate auspicious meanings–butterflies, dragonflies and flowers signifying harmony; cranes, peaches and tortoises representing long life.

Kites making and flying are an integral part of Chinese history and culture. The earliest written account of kite flying occurred in 200 B.C., when a Chinese general flew a kite over the walls of a city to estimate how far his army would have to tunnel to reach opposing soldiers. It is customary during the spring festival of Qingming for people to visit family graves to pay their respect and then celebrate rebirth by sailing their kites skyward.

For more information on the Colorful Kites of China Exhibit including family activities, visit the Garden’s website at www.portlandchinesegarden.org.
