Modern Motherhood Erin Kaleel-Johnson

Friday, August 6th, 2010

When Erin and Josh first came into little urbanites, they were pregnant with their son Oliver. They’d just moved to the Northwest from New York City to work for a large design company, and as I’d made a similar move myself, we had a lot to talk about.

That winter Erin and Josh decided to trade the Portland drizzle for the Florida sun, but we stayed in touch on Facebook and I have followed the launched of their own family company, Feel Handmade. As the buyer for little urbanites I have a particular interest in artists that create handmade products, and I was amazed by the craftsmanship, artistry, and love that goes into each of their metal and leather pieces.

When Erin and I caught up via e-mail last month, I asked her for her thoughts on a few of our Modern Motherhood questions. Here are her wonderful answers!

What physical or personality traits do you see in Oliver that remind you of yourself?

Our son is a perfect blend of us, but he gets my questioning eyebrow raise.  If you get my right eyebrow to raise high into my forehead…watch out, it’s the signal that I feel something is wrong. Oliver gives it right back to me.

Describe your favorite piece of art or project that your child has made for you.

He is too young, but I kept his very first crayon scribble.

Take a peek – what’s in your diaper bag right now?

Nothing…It was a mess, I had to clean it out because it was filled with a pair of dirty socks and organic graham cracker crumbs!

What is your must-have baby product?

Natursutten pacifiers!!!

What’s one ecologically or socially responsible thing you do that can change the world?

I couldn’t possibly list one thing.  I deeply care about the environment and want to pass a healthy planet on to my son, so I daily try to become more and more ecologically responsible. Some of the ways: We use zero chemicals around the house: from cleaning the windows, the laundry to washing my own hair and my son’s beautiful skin. We don’t use toilet paper (Toto Neorest toilet) or paper towels, we buy organically and locally, we avoid plastic as much as possible, we buy quality not quantity and this standard has become the backbone of our family business, hand-making quality handbags that will last several lifetimes…I could keep going.

What do you look forward to everyday?

Waking up to my beautiful family, spending the entire day together playing, and being creative. Also cooking, I love cooking!

What’s one way you find to spoil yourself?

Hmmmm…I don’t. I keep saying I would like a pedicure!

Is there a parenting technique (e.g. attachment parenting, the Ferber method, co-sleeping) that you have strong feelings (negative or positive) about?

I have not researched parenting techniques. I feel that good parenting comes from the heart. Love and understanding. My son sleeps with us when he needs and also loves his crib. I hold him and kiss him when he cries and he loves being independent. It seems to be working, I have a healthy very happy son with a huge of personality.

Do you read any “mommy blogs” or participate in any online parenting communities? If so, which are your favorites and why?

Not really, I always checked out Parents.com just to see the weekly progress photos and notes.  I also enjoy www.drmomma.org/

Have you read any pregnancy or childcare books that had a particularly profound influence on you?

I had many friends give me different childcare books, but none of them resonated with me. I read about hypnobirthing half way through my pregnancy and started taking a class with my husband, it was a perfect class for us. We wanted to experience everything about childbirth.  I recommend this class to every pregnant mother that does not have any complications. I was in labor for 3 days and gave birth to my son naturally.  Intense, but worth it.

What advice do you have for new parents?

You can NEVER be prepared to be a parent. Have a lot of patience and try to realize that some things are out of your control. Learning to be selfless is eye opening, it will change you and if you let it, it will help you become a better person.

Modern Motherhood with Valerie Swift

Friday, July 16th, 2010

One of the more enjoyable parts of my job is meeting other people in the children’s retail industry.  I met Valerie Swift back in 2007 when she came into the store to tell us about a must-have stroller called UPPAbaby. Valerie knew what she was talking about!  Now the UPPAbaby Vista is one of the most popular baby products on the market and one of the best selling strollers at Little Urbanites.

Today Valerie is the sales rep for many of our favorite brands, and I always listen carefully to her point of view on new products and happenings in the industry. Valerie owns her own small business called 2girls Marketing, and is the ”go to” person for many of our favorite products at Little Urbanites, including Aden+Anais, Medela, Oxo and UPPAbaby. We’re lucky to have her as part of the Little Urbanites team!

oxo tots Aden + Anais Medela Swing Breastpump UPPAbaby G-Luxe

What is your must-have baby product?

UPPAbaby VISTA. After 4 years, this hasn’t changed. I didn’t realize how attached to a stroller I could be.

What physical or personality traits do you see in your children that remind you of yourself?

High energy, analytical, sensitive and determined.

What’s one ecologically or socially responsible thing you do that can change the world?

Recycle, recycle…recycle.

What’s one way you find to spoil yourself?

Being a working mother with an active 4 y.o., finding a quiet space, snuggling under a blanket and losing myself in a good book is considered spoiling myself. However, a good facial is always a welcomed treat.

Is there a parenting technique (e.g. attachment parenting, the Ferber method, co-sleeping) that you have strong feelings (negative or positive) about?

Reggio Emilia and Parenting with Love and Logic. This method of parenting has been invaluable to teach responsibility, respect and good decision-making. It has also helps significantly with the stresses of parenting, especially in difficult situations since this method teaches parents how to empower their children to make good choices while still achieving the collective goal.

Describe your favorite piece of art or project that your child has made for you.

My 4 y.o. daughter made a book for me with drawings accompanied by a beautiful story about her and I smelling flowers and picking berries. There was also a lot of ice cream eating…all the things I love.

Have you read any pregnancy or childcare books that had a particularly profound influence on you?

Transition to Parenthood and Parenting with Love and Logic.

What advice do you have for new parents?

Trust yourself. You can do all of the research in the world, but a mother’s instinct is very powerful.

Modern Motherhood with Kristin Loffer

Friday, July 9th, 2010

In the Modern Motherhood series, the L.U. blog asks inspiring women what inspires them.

This week I want to shine some light on Kristin Loffer’s work: on her modern, brilliant textiles, vibrant colors and – most importantly – her sense of fun!

{KLT: Sketchbook}

I was introduced to Kristin’s work when I opened Little Urbanites and purchased some of her hand crafted mobiles for the store.  Since then, Kristen has grown her business to include a line of clothing, mobiles, and dolls.  She also writes a blog called KLT:sketchbook.

Kristin on her company: “KLT:works is truly a family run company. My husband is very helpful in all aspects of klt:works (even though he also has 2 other jobs). He is my main technical adviser and photographer. A day in a life around our house includes laughter, dancing, listening to music, and making.  Everything you see with a klt:works tag, is made by hand- with attention to detail and lots of heart.”

What physical or personality traits do you see in Sayer that remind you of yourself?

Sayer’s hair is very much like mine.  I think he has my smile too. It is funny, sometimes I look at him and he reminds me of pictures of myself from when I was his age (2 ½). But then the next day, he looks just like his dad. I think he may have gotten the best of both of us. Sayer is really creative – he loves music, dancing, and drawing. He is sensitive, strong, and pretty easy going. He has a keen sense of humor and love to make us laugh. Those are some of my better traits and characteristics.

{KLT: Sketchbook}

What is your must-have baby product?

Aquaphor is my must-have baby product. My doctor recommended it when Sayer had eczema and we use it for just about everything still.

Now, I am huge fan of Burt’s Bees products for Sayer.

Is there something you don’t want to teach Sayer but worry he might learn from you anyway?

Yes! I am really hard on myself- a perfectionist. I worry that he will pick that up. I am not sure if you are born with that or if it is learned. I also tend to be a bit impatient about certain things. Although, if having a child has taught me anything, it is to be more patient so maybe we can teach each other on that one.

{KLT: Sketchbook}

What do you look forward to everyday?

I look forward to seeing Sayer’s smile, feeling his hug, and doing something in the evening as a family. I love our little 3 person family. I also look forward to creating something in the studio. I get a great deal of joy from my business & family. Basically, I look forward to the surprises that the day will bring. I’m a pretty happy person these days!

{KLT: Sketchbook}

What’s one way you find to spoil yourself?

Books & Uppercase Magazine. I order little treasures from Powell’s every now and then. I only wish I was buying them in person because I love that place. Uppercase Mag is a total splurge that I adore- I got mine a few days ago which is what reminded me.

(L.U. Note: We love Powell’s too! It certainly doesn’t hurt that their downtown Portland location is only a few blocks away from us.)

{Uppercase Magazine}

Describe your favorite piece of art or project that your child has made for you.

Sayer is still pretty young, but I love it when he draws me pictures. He has been really interested in drawing people lately, namely our family (with toes). Those are my favorite things…

{KLT: Sketchbook}

What’s one ecologically or socially responsible thing you do that can change the world?

We walk places & buy organically and locally whenever we can + we use our own totes when we shop. We have a little garden in our back yard too.

{KLT: Sketchbook}

What advice do you have for new parents?

Be patient with yourselves and listen to your gut instincts. Enjoy your time with your little one- time flies!

Modern Motherhood with Marlynn Schotland

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

I met Marlynn when Little Urbanites first opened back in 2007. She wrote the nicest yelp review for the store and I could tell then that she “got” what I was trying to do. I’ve followed her career ever since and I’ve always felt I “got” and admired the work she dedicates her time and passion to.

A bit about Marlynn:

After leaving the corporate world to launch Urban Bliss, her custom stationery and design studio, Marlynn searched for resources and support organizations that would help her connect with other women on business and family issues. Inspired by that search, Marlynn founded The Power MOB on Mother’s Day, 2006.  The organization now has more than 200 members around the country. Marlynn currently has two children: Ethan, age six, and Cate, age three.

I had the chance to ask Marlynn a few questions about modern motherhood. I learn from everyone around me, and I think Marlynn has lot of knowledge to share!

What do you look forward to everyday?

Everything! I love waking up with an outline of the day in my head but knowing that it will take its own course, and every single day is just so lovely and interesting and FUN in its own crazy way!

What physical or personality traits do you see in your children that remind you of yourself?

My daughter is very much a go-against-the-grain kind of girl, which was and is still definitely me. When someone tells us we can’t or shouldn’t do something, it just makes us want to do it more, and all with a devilish grin. My son is very detail-driven, very visual, and very into creating food & art. I can relate to him a lot on those levels.

What’s one ecologically or socially responsible thing you do that can change the world?

Try. That’s the best I can do. Try to grow as much as I can in my own garden, try to buy local as much as possible, try to take my kids to the nearby farms once a week, try to recycle & reuse everything, try to only buy eco-friendly products. I try very hard, and I hope that even though I don’t do any of it 100%, just trying makes a little tiny difference.

What’s one way you find to spoil yourself?

I spoil myself by creating a lot of writing outlets that may not pay the bills but allow me to indulge in something that feeds my soul. Writing has always been my main passion since I was six years old, and something I would rather cherish and enjoy as a treat rather than make the focal point of business. It feels very rich & indulgent to give myself time to write.

What advice do you have for new parents?

Go with the flow. Embrace the chaos. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the messiness of parenting and laugh as much as possible. And never, ever think that you are a bad parent: you are the best parent in the world for your child.

Modern Motherhood with Nikki McClure

Friday, June 25th, 2010

To start our new Modern Motherhood interview series off with a bang, the Little Urbanites blog team posed a few pertinent questions to one of our favorite artists – the Pacific Northwest’s own Nikki McClure. I met Nikki when I moved to Olympia, WA in the early 00′s and was immediately charmed by her wonderfully distinct style. She’s since established an inspiring collection of books, prints, and cards from her cut paper creations, and we are proud to carry her work here at Little Urbanites. Here are Nikki’s answers to the L.U.

Modern Motherhood Questionnaire

What is your must-have baby product?

Ruskovilla silk shirt and hat from Nordic Woollens. I get them for all the babies.

What do you look forward to everyday?
Waking up. I think of new ideas and images to explore. I just lay in bed and think as my family sleeps.

Describe your favorite piece of art or project that your child has made for you.

A picture of a red-winged blackbird flying over cattails as his way of saying «sorry, Mama» for a grumpy morning.

Do you read any “mommy blogs” or participate in any online parenting communities? If so, which are your favorites and why?

This site has always helped me in time of need. It makes all the weird things that happen seem normal. http://parents.berkeley.edu/

These are some of my favorite Nikki Prints.
