Everyone loves a wacky and wild Halloween night, but with a little caution (and planning ahead) you can be sure your little ghouls and ghosts stay safe while they enjoy the most delightfully creepy night of the year. Here are some ideas from the American Academy of Pediatrics to keep your family’s Halloween running smoothly:
If trick-or-treating after dark, make sure all children and escorts have flashlight with fresh batteries.
Consider using non-toxic makeup or hats instead of masks for costumes; masks can limit or block eyesight, making tripping and tumbles more likely.
Flashlights and glowsticks are safer ways to light your jack-o’-lantern. If you do use a candle, a votive candle is safest.
When preparing for visiting trick-or-treaters, clear the porch and front yard of anything a child could trip over, such as garden hoses, toys, bikes, and lawn decorations. Don’t forget to check outdoor lights and replace burned out bulbs.
Wait until you arrive home to sort and check treats. Though tampering is rare, a responsible adult should closely examine all treats and throw away all spoiled, unwrapped, or suspicious items.
From all of us at Little Urbanites, we wish you and your family a safe, fun Halloween!
