Over the years I have collected and created some super fun activities to entertain and teach children. One project that ends up a masterpiece as a final product and cost little money is Salt Dough. This is a great project to make gifts for grandparents or to do with a group of children.
Ingredients needed. remember if you want to make a larger batch just use the ratio:
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup salt
- 1/2 cup flour
To Make:
Mix ingredients in pan. (add food coloring or glitter if you would like) Stir on low heat. When
thickens remove from heat. Put some on waxed paper or floured surface and roll out. Save in an air-tight container.
Variations:
- use straws to punch holes for hanging
- use cookie cutters to make shapes like stars
- let air dry and paper mache over
- let air dry and let children color over
- glue found objects onto the shapes
- punch holes and string to create a necklace or wall hanging
What your child is learning?
- Fine Motor Skills by sculpting and modeling clay your child is working hard on her eye fine motor skills
- Visual and Spatial Skills by cutting out clay from cookie cutters your child is practicing his eye hand coordination and spatial relations
- Confidence letting your child pick her own colors or shapes in art will encourage your child’s sense of self and build her confidence.
